By this time, Morok had been up for hours, working—not at Gotsro’s mansion, as he had thought, but in Frantair’s house on the hill. This place was much larger than Gotsro’s and more lavish. The grounds were immense and in need of tending—all had fallen into disarray at the house after the governor’s sudden death.

Morok was mystified. Was this all Gotsro had in store for him—endless hours of toil? Or was there a more sinister plan? It made him nervous, not knowing. Yet he felt a strange distance from true fear. He could feel the presence of God in his life. He knew he was safe.

The servants in this house were a mixture of Gotsro’s own servants and ones who had remained with Frantair’s house. Gotsro’s servants—the ones who had previously shared a room with Morok and Loobal—were strangely civil toward Morok. This amused him, but he treated them kindly.

The work was not difficult, but it was tedious. Morok missed Loobal terribly, and he worried about what she thought had happened to him. Would Astnor be of any help to her? He had looked very frightened when Morok last saw him. Morok’s thoughts were convoluted and unclear. He felt like he had no control over anything that was going on in his life, and he was oblivious to Gotsro’s plan for him.
